Dr. Mills' work primarily focuses on examining the cognitive, social, and linguistic resources that school-age African American children draw upon to narrate, or tell stories. The overarching goal of her research program is to develop culturally fair assessment tools that capture the spectrum of language ability in school-age African American English (AAE)-speaking children. She directs the Child Language Ability Lab which is currently engaged in projects examining adult perceptions of narration and dialectal code-switching between African American English and Mainstream American English in school-age children. The HRI is excited to welcome Dr. Mills as a new affiliate and looks forward to the outcomes of her research!
