Dr. Nathan G. Smith main area of research focuses on stress and coping, with emphases on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer persons (LGBTQ) and persons living with or affected by HIV. Smith is currently conducting studies to explore the impact of sexual and gender minority stress on substance use, stress physiology dysregulation, and mental health among LGBTQ individuals.

The disquieting rise of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation over the past few years has had a far-reaching impact on the mental health and well-being of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, according to a newly released 2023 report from the Human Rights Campaign, almost half of LGBTQ+ youth have felt unsafe in at least one place inside their school.
